France manager Didier Deschamps explains reasons for leaving stars for 2018 World Cup
France head coach Didier Deschamps has explained his decision to leave a number of stars out of their World Cup squad.
Les Bleus announced their 23-man squad to travel to Russia next month, with some shock omissions from the team, including Arsenal striker Alexandre Lacazette and Manchester United counterpart Anthony Martial.
Questions have been raised over the pair’s exclusion, although Deschamps believes he has not seen enough from the pair on an international level to justify their inclusions in the World Cup squad.
“They were good against Germany (in November 2017), but that was only one match. That aside, there were a bit less (good),” Deschamps told the media.
“It is a total analysis regarding what they could have done in certain situations, and in terms of what role they might have had in the squad.”
Deschamps also feels there is better quality ahead of Lacazette and Martial, including Olivier Giroud, Antoine Griezmann and Kylian Mbappe.
He added: “I consider Giroud, Griezmann, Fékir and Mbappé as central attackers.
“Kylian and Antoine can play in other positions. Kylian is more central, that is where he is best.”
