A fake oil marketer and a fake Islamic cleric have been arraigned in court by the  Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC on Tuesday for allegedly defrauding a businesswoman, Toyin Akinwole of N33,617,000 and assassinating her character.
According to the EFCC, a petition was received from Akinwole that Adesanya, who presented himself to the complainant as an oil and gas operator, urged her to invest in the oil business.
The EFCC alleged that the complainant transferred the sum of N33,617,000 to Adesanya to help her invest in the oil and gas business.
The defendants was said to have converted the money to their personal use and refused to refund it to the complainant.
The Punch reported that after Adesanya was granted an administrative bail by the anti-graft agency, he allegedly uploaded the nude pictures of Akinwole on the social media and claimed that she jumped into the Lagos lagoon after the pictures went viral.
The charges read in part, “That you Adesanya Paul and Awojobi Ganiu, sometime in 2017 in Lagos, within the Ikeja Judicial Division, with intent to defraud, fraudulently obtained the sum of N33,617,000 by false pretenses, property of Mrs Oluwatoyin Akinwole, on the representation that you are into crude oil business, which representation you know to be false.”
They, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Akinwole, who was the first prosecution witness of the EFCC, told the court that the defendants assassinated her character by defrauding her and posting her nude pictures on the social media.
She added that Adesanya and Ganiu lied to her that death was looming over her and that she had to engage in special prayers to avert it.
She said, “I was introduced to Adesanya by my friend, Sherifat, who stays in Texas, United States, and Adesanya told me that he was into crude oil business and advised me to invest in that business.
“Sometime in June 2017, Adesanya and Sherifat told me that Adesanya wanted to open his fifth petrol filling station on August 5 at Ijebu Ode and that his mother’s birthday was on August 2, and I told them that I would be in Nigeria by then and that I would attend the party.
“When I left Ijebu Ode after the party, I was still communicating with Adesanya and he told me that if I had any amount that I could invest in the oil business, I would get 150 per cent profit and I told him I would look for money and invest.”
The presiding judge, Justice Mojisola Dada, adjourned till December 19, 2018 for cross-examination and ordered that the defendants be remanded in prison.
