According to a research done by Truecaller recently, it was discovered that over 12million Nigerians had activated the Do-Not-Disturb codes introduced by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC’s) with the goal of preventing unsolicited messages and calls.

Truecaller ranked South Africa highest in Africa among the world’s top 20 while Nigeria was excluded from the list last year.

In 2017, Nigeria ranked ninth behind India, USA, Brazil, Chile, South Africa, Mexico, Turkey and Peru respectively in the world top 20 list. While in 2018 Truecaller claimed to have helped users block and identify 17.7 billion spam calls and revealed the identity of 74.1billion calls.

Truecaller explained that the initiators of spam calls emanated from related categories which include operators from telemarketing, scam, insurance, debt collection, bank, political, and health.

In 2018, NCC admonished telecom subscribers who have been frustrated by unwanted calls and messages to text “STOP” to “2442” or “HELP” for options. With the introduction of these codes, as at November 201 8, over 12million subscribers had used the code to block unsolicited calls and messages.
