The first openly gay Latin trap artist, Kevin Fret, has been shot and killed in Puerto Rico.

Puerto Rico’s newspaper, to El Vocero, reports that the 24-year-old was on his Yamaha motorcycle when he was shot at around 5.30am on Thursday in Santurce, San Juan. He was shot eight times and died later the same day at the Medical Center of Río Piedras of injuries related to the shooting.

Fret who first stepped into the spotlight in April 2018 with his single ‘Soy Asi’ was an outspoken advocate for the LGBT community and was one of the few well-known gay rappers on the Island nation.

Fret’s manager, Eduardo Rodriguez, confirmed his death in a statement, saying  ‘Kevin was an artistic soul, a big-hearted dreamer.

His passion was music, and still had a lot to do. This violence must stop.

There are no words that describe the feeling we have and the pain that causes us to know that a person with so many dreams has to go. We must all unite in these difficult times, and ask for much peace for our beloved Puerto Rico.’
