At the sight of a checkboard with some piece on it in a recreational centre, small gathering or in a friend’s house, you might have been wondering what the game is all about. At times, some do assume that those who play the game are professionals or extra talented individuals. Sure, there are some who are professionals and others grandmasters, yet there are amateurs in the game.

Chess is by far the most popular board game in the world. There are millions of players of all ages and the number keeps growing. Maybe it’s because you become a general who directs an army against your opponent in an exciting battle of wits. Whatever the reason, chess is challenging and fascinating.

It is a two –player strategy board game played on a chessboard, a checkered game board with 64 squares arranged in an 8×8 grid. Each playing piece is moved in line with precise rules, with the aim of putting the opponent’s king under a direct attack from which escape is impossible, this is referred to as ‘checkmate’.

In playing chess, you have to be familiar with all the pieces and know how they move. There is no hidden information, just a set of universally accepted moves. Each player begins with 16 pieces: one king, one queen, two rooks, two knights, two bishops and eight pawns.

Each of the six piece types moves differently, with the most powerful being the queen and the least powerful the pawn. Remember our objective is to checkmate the opponent’s king by placing it under an inescapable threat of capture.

At this juncture, a player’s pieces are used to attack and capture the opponent’s pieces, while supporting each other.

Playing the game typically involves making exchanges of one piece for an opponent’s similar piece, but also finding and strategising opportunities to trade advantageously, or to get a better position.

In addition to checkmate, a player wins the game if the opponent resigns, or (in a timed game) runs out of time. There are also several ways that a game can end in a draw.
