Swimming is an excellent way to work your entire body and cardiovascular system. An hour of swimming burns almost as many calories as running, without all the impact on your bones and joints.

Swimming is a great recreational activity for people of all ages. Recreational swimming can provide you with a low-impact workout and it’s also a good way to relax and feel good.

Hotjist.com on its recreational tour, in an interview with a swimming coach, Chukuwma Benjamin in Ikeja area of Lagos, learnt about the numerous health benefit of swimming.

Benjamin pointed that swimming is not only a recreational activity; it can as well serve as a competitive activity which can provide the health benefit of a vigorous workout as well as the fun and thrill of competition.

“Swimming is a great workout because you need to move your whole body against the resistance of the water. It is a good all-round activity which allows you to keep your heart rate up but takes some of the impact stress off your body, builds endurance, muscle strength and cardiovascular fitness of our body

“Swimming also helps maintain a healthy weight, healthy heart and lungs, tones muscles and builds strength; it provides an all body workout, as nearly all of your muscles are used during swimming, He said.

He revealed the common swimming styles in recreational swimming as breaststroke, backstroke, side stroke and freestyle. Adding that main strokes used in competitive swimming are breaststroke, freestyle, backstroke and butterfly.

Swimming is said to be a relaxing and peaceful form of exercise, which will alleviate stress, improve coordination, balance your posture, improve flexibility and provide a pleasant way to cool down on a hot day.

Swimming can be done in many places like swimming pool which is present in most standard hotels in Lagos, beaches, lakes, dams, rivers, swimming clubs, fitness centres, and  universities to mention a few.

Benjamin gave some easy steps on how to start swimming, first one need to get the basic accessories which include; pair of swimming trunk, thereafter one will decides a safe environment, warm up and stretch your muscles and joints before entering the water and have plenty of fluids on hand and drink regularly.

He warned those who don’t know how to swim to first learn under a coach as safety should be everyone’s priority.
