Uzakah Timi Ebiweni, a 300 level student of the Niger Delta University, NDU who jumped into the river yesterday was asked to withdraw from school by NDU authority.

Timi terminated his life by jumping into a river in Bayelsa state, after the school authority counselled him to withdraw from school over his failure to pass the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery, MBBS exams.

In a press briefing, organised by the Niger Delta University, NDU’s Public Relations Officer, Ndoni Ingezi confirmed the incident, noting that the remains has been recovered and deposited at the Sabageria mortuary.

Ingezi said, aside from the fact that Timi failed the exam, another thing that might have prompted his decision might have been the news that he was one of the 22 students who have been shortlisted to be withdrawn from the school’s college of medicine.

He said “You know it is a general practice that every student must pass the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery, MBBS exams before progressing to the next level of academic pursuit.

“But Ebiweni and 21 others failed beyond the level that they could be placed on academic probation for another academic year so they had to be withdrawn.

“So in their usual practice, they do not break the news to the students until they are invited for counselling.

“When Ebiweni was counseled and informed about the fact that he will be withdrawn from college, on that day, he accepted the decision of the college in good fate and left.

“Only for the University to hear afterwards that the young man took his own life.”
