Dr Maymunah while speaking on “How to reduce the rate of suicide in our society” told us that if a person escapes death while trying to commit suicide, it is possible that such person would be prosecuted if caught, for wanting to kill him/herself. She said studies has shown that suicide is common among the age range of 18-29 which is unusual because this is the age where young people are suppose to be agile and productive but unfortunately the recent cases of suicide in Nigeria has claimed the lives of young people. “In reducing the rate of suicide, we have to understand that every individual came from a family which is the primary unit and then we also belong to a community so we have to strategize. This would start from you as an individual what can you do to help yourself? and then what can your family do to help you if you are facing challenges and what does the society has to do to help you cope with the situation” the doctor said. She also disclosed to us that there are lots of self care medium that people have been using to clear off suicidal thoughts form their minds but because of lack of information many people are not aware of it. “if there is a family history of suicide, someone somewhere in that family would also identify with the fact that suicide is okay.” she said. The Doctor stated that, Nigerians have to learn to start living in the present because there is so much anxiety attached to thinking about the future adding that so many people are engrossed in thinking of what they want to become in future that they forget to live the moment and then if anything goes wrong they will fall into depression and might end up killing themselves. “If you continue to focus on the present you will be able to create the future desire” she said adding that one of the best ways to avoid committing suicide is building a healthy support system by connecting with right thinking individuals who would help you realize what the problem is. “a healthy mind is a healthy body” she said. Psychologist Miss Uzor Rita also told us that to reduce the rate of suicide in the society individuals have to take up the responsibility of reaching out to people. Rita said “First things first is reaching out to people, not just people who are suicidal but to other people, to everyone so as to let them know what to do if they see or know someone who is suicidal” She also mentioned that we need to let people know that being suicidal isn’t a spiritual thing and can happen to anyone, adding that its nothing to be ashamed about. “Creating awareness everywhere, I feel NGO’s should dedicate a day out of every month, whereby they will go around to create awareness and let people know that suicide is never the answer” the Psychologist said. However she said people who have suicidal thought should be given the freedom and love to express themselves so that they’ll be able to speak up if they feel anything.
