Greg walked into the living room to find Anne sitting directly opposite the entrance door. He was not surprised. But he did not have the energy for any confrontation. Their eyes locked and he looked away hoping he did not look guilty. She could read people so well.

Anne was about to start interrogating him when she saw the bruises and swelling on his face and neck. Quickly she led him to their bedroom and started to fuss over him. Greg was just glad he could rest for the day. He ‘ooohed and aaaahd’ when she touched sensitive spots on his face. And then her phone rang in the living room.

Anne was elated. Seconds later, she disclosed the news about her promotion to Greg. He congratulated her. She suggested staying back to nurse him but he insisted.

” Honey, that reminds me,  Fred said he’ll be travelling out by the end of the month. I want us to pay him a visit on our way back from grand pa’s next week .You know it’s been long I went there and it’ll be an opportunity for me to show you the land I was talking about in the area and …”  Greg just nodded. He was too tired to respond.

Quickly, Anne got ready for work. She tried different clothes till she decided it was a ‘suit day’. She picked a navy blue pant suit and white blouse, turned to face the mirror and was happy with the pretty, confident and smart looking woman staring right back at her.

Greg stirred the moment she stepped out of the bathroom. But he did not open his eyes. Anne asked whether he heard what she had said earlier and he nodded.

” Which country?” He asked uninterestedly.

“..Said Togo and he’ll be there for a month. ” She answered.

”He can go to Botswana for all I care and spend eternity there.” Greg murmured.

” You say? ” Anne asked. No response. He had dozed off.

Anne looked at her husband and smiled. He looked younger and cute even in pain. She loved him so much. But she was worried, very unsettled even. She needed to know what happened last night. She would wait.

What’s wrong with me sef, it’s not like he spent the night with some woman.

Anne picked her bag and was about to kiss her husband goodbye when her phone rang. It was her twin and she wanted them to meet. It was urgent. It was about Greg and some woman last night.

Anne’s heart skipped two beats. She drew back from kissing Greg and really looked at him. He was becoming unrestful. But that was not all. He was also pleading and calling out to someone or something. It hurt Anne that he wasn’t calling out to her. But when she heard the name clearly, she calmed considerably.

Anne chuckled and kissed her husband.

” Have you been up to no good ehn, sweetheart? This one you’re dreaming about hell.”

Greg stilled.

She traced his eyebrows with her forefinger lovingly, kissed him again and realised he was sweating. Gently, she woke him and wiped his sweat.

” Honey  are you sure you don’t want me to stay back and… “. Greg shook his head slowly. Hurriedly, she dished food for him and put the tray beside the bed then, brought some drugs for him. After, looking herself over in the mirror again,  she picked her bag again and left the room.

Seconds later, Greg opened his eyes and swallowed. He was about to sit up when Anne rushed back in. Immediately, he closed his eyes and pretended to be asleep. Anne grabbed her phone and looked at her husband again.

” I’m sure you’ll be better tomorrow honey. Then, we can talk, right?”. No response. Anne tapped him gently and Greg nodded.

“Good, cause I want to hear all that happened and not from someone else.” She said. Especially not from Sann.

She was a good wife.  She would wait to hear the truth and she would never doubt him. He had never given her reason to. Anne walked out. Greg opened his eyes but did not sit up. Did I just call out to Helen? What was it Anne said about Hel? And what was that about hearing from someone else? Had someone seen and told her? Was it..? why, of course it must be Fred…”.Greg made a quick move to get up and nearly passed out. The wave of nausea that swept him was strong. He lay back quietly in bed and tried to sleep. But couldn’t.

Tomorrow will take care of itself. Slowly, he stared off to yet, another bend in his past.

Where could he have gone to? What brother disappears on the day of his sister’s wedding? At fourteen going on fifteen, was he a kid? What kind of stress is this on my own wedding day? Greg was as angry as he was tired. He had gone to every tennis court around the area but did not find Guwasen. It was dark already. He tried to call his wife but the phone kept ringing. He thought nothing of it at first then decided to put a call through to his father- in-law. But the man dropped the call. Greg tried once more and this time it was unreachable.  He knew calling his mother-in-law would be a waste of time. The panic he felt was as sharp as the pain he felt in his heart, all at once, even before he thought of Helen. He knew something was terribly wrong. I never should have let you leave my side, Hel. I should have listened to you. He made a sharp U – turn towards her house.

He had never been so late in his life.

He parked his car close to the gate. He was used to it. The compound was a large one and so whenever he brought Helen home, they would walk and steal kisses all the way to the main house. Will I,  will we ever experience that again, will I ever see you again, my love? Greg wondered.

The house looked the same, well lit with soft lights, lawn as beautiful as when he last was there. The wall clock on the outer door said 8:45pm. What exactly was the essence of putting a wall clock outside a house?   In one flash, he saw a movement . Greg frowned. What was that? The atmosphere seemed suddenly eerie. Greg parked and ran to the door and that’s when he saw it – the blood on the door which was swinging loosely. And him – Guwasen, whom he had been looking for.

…to be continued in episode 5

Nice piece. Pls hurry with the next episode writer. This is too suspenseful and short for me o. That aside, I think the blood on the door is Helen’s or her mother’s. But that Guwasen boy must be very silly o. So he wasn’t even at any tennis court? Imagine what Greg must have gone through. Haba! I feel for him sha…
