She wrote on her page that her son had suffered an attack at 3am in the morning of July 19th, 2019 and was rushed immediately to the Ikorodu General Hospital, Ikorodu immediately and got there around 3.30am she wrote. “Unfortunately for us, the doctor wasn’t on seat in his office”. She further narrated how eventually the doctor turned up around 5am without showing any emotions on the severity of the situation. “No first aid treatment (was given) except from the one given from the nurse, the worst part of it was that he kept insisting he wants to go and pray (as a Muslim). All of this was around 5.30am cos I kept checking the time”. Oyin Gucci further stated that she got all the ‘stuffs’ the doctor asked us to get while he went to the mosque and returned around 6am, her son had already become weak. “During this period, my son couldn’t breathe fine again and he said he will need to transfer us to Ikeja (Lagos State University Teaching Hospital) because there was no bed to admit him. To cut the long story short, I lost my son around 10am” The mother of the baby, Oyin Gucci believes that the negligence of the doctor on duty led to the death of her baby boy and called on the Lagos State Ministry of Health to thoroughly investigate the events that led to her son’s death. The Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Professor Akin Abayomi via his twitter handle commiserated with Oyin Gucci on the death of her son and assured her that the Lagos State Ministry of Health is already working in conjunction with the Medical Director of the Ikorodu General Hospital to pull out records of the incident to determine the culpability or otherwise of the doctor on-duty. However, independent investigation conducted by Hotjist.com revealed that the late baby boy was brought-in to the emergency section of the pedreatic ward of the Ikorodu General Hospital at 4.28am as against 3.30am stated by the mother on social media. Sources at the general hospital who craved anonymity told Hotjist.com that the doctor on-duty was infact in the theater with the Obstetrics & Gynaecology team to carry out an emergency caeserian section being conducted on another patient. The source stated that; the doctor in question is a medical officer at the paedriatics department, and they are required to be present when an emergency caeserian section is being carried out in order to receive the baby and resuscitate as needed. Other sources disclosed that the sick baby brought in by Oyin Gucci was put on oxygen and immediately the doctor was through at the theater, he attended to the baby. “It was even so difficult for the doctor to secure an intravenous access, so had to shave the baby’s hair to put a scalp vein via a canular”. Hotjist.com learnt that when the baby was stabilized, though still on oxygen, the doctor referred the baby to LASUTH for further attention. Based on the norm in medical practice, it is the ambulance of the referring hospital that should take the patient to the new hospital the patient is being referred to but on the said date, that was not done. Several medical personnel spoken to complained of lack of adequate support in terms of equipment and facilities that could make their job easier, “you will find out that maybe the ambulance at the hospital at that time has no fuel or not in a not in good working condition”. As at press time, the Lagos State Ministry of Health was yet to make public the result of their findings on the incident.
