Africa is blessed with several variants of delicious and sumptuous traditional delicacies that do not only fill the stomach and make one’s mouth watery, but are well known to be medicinal and contain health benefits. No doubt, many of these dishes are either made in Nigeria or best made in Nigeria, one of which is Marugbo and Pupuru a traditional meal that helps prevent stroke and heart attack. Every part of the country has different native meals, just as Ofokore is known to be Ogun State’s native meal, Pounded Yam and Egusi Soup for Osun State, other States have their own special meals too. Marugbo Soup, which originated from the western part of Nigeria, Ondo State to be precise, is a traditionally made delicacy, prepared with the combination of two leaves; Marugbo being the primary leaf , and any other such as, efinrin, Iteji, akintola, lapalapa, epojebu , ekikan is also added which gives the soup a dark green ‘to black colouring. The leaves are plucked and used fresh. It is considered the native meal of the Ikale’s in Ondo State. The locally made meal contains a lot of medicinal benefits because it has a laxative effect on the body due to the concentration of vegetables in the Soup. It is best eaten with Pupuru ( smoked cassava). Pupuru is made from Cassava, it involves the process of turning cassava into the form of Pupuru Powder. The swallow ‘Pupuru’ may not be known by other Nigerians but it is well known in Ondo State by those who hail from Ilaje, Ikale, and Apoi, in the South West of Nigeria. However, Pupuru is just like any other swallow we consume, for example, we have Amala, Eba, Fufu, Semo, Pounded Yam. It consists of carbohydrate which supplies energy to the body. Different process is involved to achieve Pupuru powder; the first step is the Peeling of Cassava, followed by sun drying, frying and then grinding it into powder. Marugbo Soup Supplies protein to the body. Since it contains a lot of meat. It is rich in iron which helps to stimulate the red blood cell formation. It supplies a lot of Vitamin E which makes the skin appearance radiant and beautiful. Also, it contains calcium that helps strengthen the bone. The soup also helps to manage a stable level of Low density lipoprotein ( LDL) and High Density Lipoprotein ( HDL), avoiding any possibility of Stroke attack and a sudden heart attack too. Marugbo is known for preparing you for fast recovery , because it is rich in Vitamin A and Vitamin C. More so, it is served for a mother who just gave birth to help melt away the left over blood in the stomach. To cook Pupuru, boil some quantity of water on medium heat, after which is boiled bring down the pot and pour the Pupuru powder into the boiling water. Stir continuously with a Spatula and turn as if you are making Eba, It should be smooth and not too soft. After it is done, you have a thick and smooth taste. To prepare Marugbo Soup, you need ingredients such as, dry Marugbo leaves dry Efirin leaf ( 1 cup), shredded smoked fish (3 cups), 2 seasoning cubes, preferred taste of salt, onion, 3 spoons of red oil, shredded panla fish to desired taste, meat and fish to taste, pepper. How to prepare ; Step 1- Fish and meat should be cleaned Prepare a large pot which contains 2-3 cups of water, then add your shredded panla, salt, and Maggi cube to simmer until it is tender. It should be on, medium heat. Step 2 – More water should be added to the cooked beef, followed by crayfish, your smoked fish, and palm oil and stir. Step 3 – After allowing it to simmer for 10 minutes, stir and taste the broth. If you haven’t gotten your desired taste, adjust seasoning. Step 4 – Add blended vegetables and pepper into the cooked broth, stir and taste. A little water should be added if the broth is considered too thick.Step 5 – Let it simmer for about 12-15 minutes, after that it is ready to be served. Serve with your prepared Pupuru or preferred swallow. Enjoy your meal!!.
