By Admin Posted on January 28, 2020 5 min read 0 0 109 Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Google+ Share on Pinterest Joseph Omoniyi . Since his arrest by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC on December 31, 2019, former Senator who represented the Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani was arraigned before the Federal High Court, Abuja for allegedly collecting sums of money from some members of the public in the name of the acting chairman of the anti-graft agency, Ibrahim Magu. He was however on Monday, 27th of January, granted bail in the sum of ten million naira, after spending about 30 days in detention. Sani’s ordeal began after he was picked up by the EFCC as he was alleged to have demanded $25, 000 from a car dealer, the owner of ASD Motors, Alhaji Sani Dauda in a bid to influence his pending court cases. The Kaduna based businessman was said to have been approached by the lousy critic of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration in a bid to help him concoct crimes against his estranged in-law. In his petition to the EFCC, Dauda said he had given the former senator $10, 000 before reporting to the Commission. He also claimed Sani Shehu had also collected N4 million from him to give to the Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN Justice Tanko Muhammed, and some other four judges. The accused was arrested at a location in Abuja after he was said to have invaded invitations and arrest by the EFCC as he allegedly switched off his mobile phone. The former lawmaker has however denied all the allegations while the CJN also denied links with Mr. Shehu Sani. Shehu Sani also alleged that the Federal government is just trying to concoct unfounded allegations by allegedly using his accuser to frame him up, in order to silence him over his consistent criticism of the Buhari’s administration. He had earlier denied reports that he confessed on record to extorting Dauda after being confronted with tapes of alleged telephone conversations, saying the recorded tapes are nothing but scripted and doctored work tactically done by his desperate accusers who want to get him out of the way at all costs. Meanwhile, the Senior Special Assistant to activist, Mr. Suleiman Ahmed has said that the ex-lawmaker’s clear conscience will prove his innocence against his political arraignment after 30 days of what he called illegal arrest and detention in an inhospitable and inhabitable environment. Mr. Ahmed further noted that arraigning him will provide an opportunity to prove that he is innocent of what he referred to as baseless and fabricated allegations. The Court granted Shehu Sani a bail in the sum of N10million with a surety who owns a landed property that is worth N10 million. Delivering the judgement, Justice Inyang Ekwo also ordered the defendant to deposit his international passport with the court and also inform the court whenever he wants to travel out of the country. Justice Ekwo also directed the court’s registry to verify his assets and documents to be tendered as a guarantee of the surety. He also ordered the court’s registry to notify the Nigerian Immigration Service that he defendant’s passport is with the court. The judge adjourned the trial till February 24, 25 and 26.
