President Mohammed Buhari Begs Assu to Suspend Planned Strike

President Mohammadu Buhari yesterday pleaded with the nation’s Academic Staff Union of Universities to shelve its planned indefinite action in the interest of peace as the government was already addressing its grievances.
Besides, he assured them of addressing the rot in the education sector just as panacea for other sectors was in top gear.
Buhari said this yesterday in Osun during his one-day working visit to the state barely 48 hours after ASUU threatened to embark on a nationwide strike to press home its demands for the implementation of its 2009 agreement with the Federal Government.
Buhari maintained that education would no longer be relegated to the background by his administration as 10per cent of the budget was already devoted to education with a view to demonstrating its priority.
He insisted that education would be given priority by the three tiers of governments for the overall development of every individual in the society.
He said: “My government has devoted ten per cent of the entire budget to the education sector to show the priority of the government and my desire is to maintain high tempo in education as it was in the past.
“All Progressives Congress government is set to make education in Nigeria qualitative as promised in our manifesto. We are desired to tackle the rot in the education sector, so also, other sectors in the country.
“The commissioned schools are monumental and I appeal to other states across the federation to key into this and take education to greater heights in Nigeria.
“Osogbo High School being commissioned is a legacy of Gov. Rauf Aregbesola’s administration. It is three schools in one place. The economy is unquantifiable and worthy of emulation by other states.
“Everything will be done by the present administration to mitigate their pains and instill integrity on all sectors in the land.”
