AFCON 2017: Cameroon Wins African Cup Of Nations
Cameroon has emerged champions after defeating Egypt 2-1 in the final of the African Cup of Nations which was played on Sunday night.
The Indomitable Lions came from behind to beat Egypt 2-1 and seal a fifth Africa Cup of Nations in a thrilling, edgy final.
Arsenal midfielder, Mohammed Elneny, had given the Pharaohs the lead on 22 minutes with a beautifully taken near-post strike with Egypt looking good for an astonishing eighth African title.
However, the tables were turned in the second half when just before the hour-mark, Nicolas N’Koulou got the equaliser for Cameroon before Vincent Aboubakar sealed the victory with his 88th minute strike.
Aboubakar swept in the winner two minutes from time, flicking the ball over defender Ali Gabr and thumping it home.
That sparked furore in a near-capacity crowd of more than 38,000 in Gabon’s capital, which was mainly consisting of the Cameroonian supporters.
With the victory, Cameroon becomes the second most successful nation in the competition’s history – behind Egypt – and marks the first time they have beaten the Pharoahs in the final in three attempts.
Egypt fell just short on their return to the competition after a seven-year absence, as the defeat will be especially painful for their coach Hector Cuper.
