Anambra breaks record with 37 gov’ship candidates — INEC
The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, yesterday, said 37 political parties have submitted candidates for the November 18 gubernatorial election in Anambra State.
Speaking on the preparations by INEC ahead of the election and other election updates at the Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room dialogue session, Yakubu said the number of candidates for the election in Anambra was the highest ever fielded for any governorship election in Nigeria.
He said INEC monitored the primaries of all the political parties, but was surprised that two of the parties submitted different names from the names of the candidates that emerged winners of the monitored primaries.
The INEC chairman said increase in the number of political parties for the election posed another challenge in that the ballot papers would now have to be longer, which increased the chances that the ballot boxes might not contain the ballot papers.
He, however, added that, “The commission has never been more confident; everything needed to be done has been done. No logo of any party will be omitted.”
