Nine foods to boost fertility: This diet could help you get pregnant
Experts have said people should cut down on unhealthy food and avoid alcohol, tobacco, processed food and additives as much as possible.
Nat Hawes, author of Nature Cures, said: “The foods consumed and toxins ingested can have an effect on eggs and sperm for up to 90 days ahead, which is why it is important to consume foods that only have a beneficial effects and remove toxins three months ahead of the time for a planned conception.
“Organically grown food and grass fed animals contain no chemical pesticides, antibiotics and hormones which can adversely affect human fertility.
The nutritionist recommended people looking to get pregnant could avoid soya beans, high gluten grains such as wheat and even some low fat products.
She also recommended people should reduce their intake of sugar, which means many processed foods and soft drink should be eliminated from the diet.
NHS Choices said: “You will increase your chances of getting pregnant if both you and your partner are in good health.
“A bad diet, being overweight or obese, smoking, drinking and unhealthy working conditions can affect the quality of sperm and stop you getting pregnant.
“You should both try to make your lifestyle as healthy as possible before you try to conceive
Nat Hawes’ Nature Cures to be taken three months prior to conception include:
1. Beans lentils and pulses provide an excellent source of fibre, protein and other nutrients vital to fertility
2. Berries, citrus and dried fruits like dates, figs and raisins are an important addition to the diet during preconception
3. Eggs, blue cheese goats’ milk and plain yoghurt with lives cultures provide many nutrients vital for conception
4. Fibre-rich foods such as amaranth, brown rice, buckwheat, millet, oats, pulses, quinoa, rye, spelt and teff must be consumed at least once a day. Only wholegrains should be consumed as refined products lack vital nutrients.
5. Green leafy vegetables and other vegetables of all colours should be consumed every day. Dark-coloured vegetables and fruits contain anthocyanin, which are important antioxidants, and red or orange fruits and vegetables contain cretinoid, which are equally important for fertility and a healthy baby.
6. Maca helps to balance the hormones, increase eggs and sperm health and increase sperm count, while also being a tonic for the endocrine system.
7. Nuts and seeds are an important addition to the daily diet for improved fertility, especially almonds and walnuts and chia, hemp, flax, pumpkin, sesame and sunflower seeds.
8. Oily fish and organ meats should be consumed at least twice a week.
9. Raw juices can provide many vital nutrients especially apricot, banana, papaya, red grape, lemon, carrot, beetroot, tomato and spinach.
