Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai has released the test scripts of some of the 21,780 primary school teachers who failed the state’s competency test.

To vindicate the government’s decision to sack the teachers, the state’s governor has released the scripts that showed the performance of some of the teachers.

The scripts were released on the state governor’s official Twitter account (@GovKaduna), on Thursday, November 9, 2017.

The subjects covered on the competency exam include Mathematics, English Language, Social Studies and Primary Science.

The scripts were filled with a lot of spelling errors, lack of comprehension, and unintelligible construction of sentences.

While the details of the candidates such as identification number, qualification, name of school and local government area were made public, the names of the teachers were covered up.

The government’s decision to disengage the teachers has divided opinions across the country as debates are ongoing online about the consequences of the mass dismissals.

The governor had previously condemned the mass failure of the teachers and the public outcry in some quarters criticising the dismissals.

He said, “Many times, the decisions we take offer us no political advantages in a polity long accustomed to the false allure of populism. But we do what is necessary, not minding the direct impact on us, but conscious of the dire consequences of inaction for our people.

“It is irresponsible not to act when most of our primary school teachers cannot make 75% in a Class Four examination or to shrink from verifying workers and pensioners because those affected will scream and make the world believe that nobody is being paid any salary or pension!”

21,780 failed exam

Of the 33,000 primary school teachers who sat for the examination conducted by the state’s Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), only 11,220 passed the exercise.

After issuing a one-month notice to the failed teachers to prepare for disengagement from service, the Kaduna State Executive Council has approved the immediate commencement of the process of recruiting 25,000 new primary school teachers.

In reaction to the dismissal, several protests have sprung up across the state resulting in a violent attack on lawmakers and vandalisation of properties worth millions at the state’s House of Assembly complex.

Failed teachers can enroll for recruitment

Teachers who failed the exam and were disengaged have been encouraged to enroll again for the state’s ongoing recruitment of new teachers with submission of applications slated to end on November 19.

Short listed candidates will be invited for a written test on November 26 and successful candidates will be interviewed on January 8, 2018 before temporary appointment letters will be issued to successful applicants to commence work on January 25.
