Former Super Eagle Striker, Yakubu Aiyegbeni Retires From Football at 35
Yakubu Aiyegbeni has announced his retirement from football after 20 active years in the sport.
Aiyegbeni, 35, started his senior club career with Julius Berger before moving on to play for Maccabi Haifa in Isreal before moving to represent the likes of Portsmouth, Middlesbrough, Blackburn Rovers, Leicester City, Coventry City and Everton in the English Premier League.
The striker also represented Nigeria where he earned 57 caps for the Super Eagles, scoring 21 goals in the process.
He won bronze with Nigeria at the Africa Cup of Nations in 2000 and also played at the World Cup in 2010.
Yakubu, popularly called “The YAK” in England became an enemy of Nigeria football fans after his famous ‘miss’ at the FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
The Edo-born Energy playing forward, however, retired from international football two years after the 2010 FIFA world cup.
Last season he joined Coventry City in February until the end of that term, however, the contract was mutually terminated due to the Forward’s struggle with fitness.
