Fayose seeks Support to stop Governors from Borrowing beyond their Tenures
Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose has asked for the support of Nigerians in stopping governors from borrowing beyond their tenures.
He met a debt of over N70 billion when he resumed office, he wrote, which the state services with N1 billion monthly.
He added that he owes civil servants salaries in arrears of 4 months, as July’s was paid on Friday.
See his tweets below:
I wish to urge Nigerians to support my position that State Governors must not be allowed to borrow money beyond their tenure. A governor whose tenure will end in 2019 must not be allowed to borrow money that will be repaid till 2020.
When I was forced out of office on October 16, 2006, I left over N10bn in Ekiti State treasury. I came back exactly 8 years after to meet over N70bn debt. That debt, we are servicing with over N1bn monthly.
As at today, we are owing Ekiti State Civil servants 4 months salary. We paid July 2017 salary two days ago and we will keep striving to reduce the debt on workers salary.
I’m not among those Nigerians that goes about lying to their people. There are States where workers are being paid half salary and they are telling Nigerians that workers are not being owed salary. In Ekiti, we are owing salary and we are making efforts to pay.
