Arsene Wenger: ‘Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang would fit in at Arsenal’
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has downplayed suggestions that he may have to contend with disciplinary problems if Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang joins the club from Borussia Dortmund this month.
Dortmund manager Peter Stoger has said that he ‘cannot comprehend’ the player’s attitude, while sporting director Michael Zorc has described him as “untolerable” in recent weeks.
The 28-year-old has been dropped from the first-team squad several times this season for “disciplinary reasons”, which have allegedly included being late for training and skipping team meetings.
Dortmund are now keen to offload the player this month and are believed to be in advanced negotiations with Arsenal over a deal that could be worth as much as £60m.
Pressed for the latest developments at his weekly press conference today, Wenger told reporters: “I have nothing to add on that. This kind of thing is better when it’s secret and when you don’t comment before announcing it when it’s over the line.”
Asked if Aubameyang would “fit in” at the Emirates, Wenger added: “Yes, because character can be a very positive note and negative, but overall you look at the achievement of a player over his career and when it’s been positive the character has been used in a positive way.”
Aubameyang has 98 goals to his name in 143 Bundesliga appearances during his four-and-a-half years at Dortmund.
