UN HUMANITARIAN OUTLOOK FOR NORTH EAST
The United Nations says an estimated 7.7 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance in 2018 as a result of the unrest in the North East region of Nigeria.
The humanitarian crisis in the North-East occasioned by the activities of Boko Haram insurgency according to UN is one of the most severe humanitarian crisis in the world today.
In its 2018 outlook for the troubled North-East, the UN said 7.7 million people need assistance while 6.1 million is the target to reach. This will gulp a whopping 1.05 billion dollars.
The humanitarian crisis triggered by insurgency in the North East has now become a global concern. The crisis according to the UN has spilled over to the Lake Chad region threatening the stability of neighboring countries in the North East region.
Edward Kallon, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Nigeria said the millions of people affected are the displaced ones, who leave in camps and have no home to return to after insurgents have destroy everything they have. He said the UN hopes to provide a life-saving emergency assistance to the most vulnerable people affected.
The United states Ambassador to Nigeria Stuart Symington who commended Nigeria for its effort in resettling the displaced people in 20127 charged government to do more to save lives of women and children who are the major causalities of the insurgency.
Minister of state for budget and planning Zaynab Ahmed said the Federal government is committed to rehabilitate and resettle those affected by the unrest in the North East. She said government spent over 1 billion dollars in 2017 to cater for displaced persons and rebuild the North East.
The minister also called on the private sector to complement government efforts at saving lives and make the society a safer place for all.
