MARADONA YET TO GET OVER ARGENTINA’S 4-2 THRASHING BY NIGERIA

Read Time:1 Minute, 42 Second

Argentina legend and former coach, Diego Maradona is yet to get over
his country’s thrashing at the hands of Nigeria in a friendly match
last November and is concerned the Super Eagles could repeat that feat
when both teams meet in the World Cup in Russia.
Nigeria has lost in all previous meetings against Argentina at the
World Cup but Maradona has raised an alarm that his countryā€™s national
teamā€™s defence is a big minus heading into the World Cup. He believes
Nigeria can once again exploit the loophole when both countries clash
on June 26.
Maradona confessed that he is yet to get over the Super Eaglesā€™
stunning 4-2 thumping of his country last November during an
international friendly in Krasnodar, Russia.
It is in this light that he warned that there could be a repeat if
something is not done about La Albicelesteā€™s defence and midfield.
Maradona said: ā€œWe have no midfield deserving of the name. Today,
except for Lionel Messi, people have lost respect for the Argentina
team.
ā€œNobody is afraid of us. Look at the last game with Nigeria. We almost
conceded eight goals. You know what happened in my time in a game like
that.
ā€œBut Sampaoli is lucky. If the baby [Messi] is on fire, he will cover
for all the mistakes. We have a 60 per cent chance of being champions
[at the World Cup].
ā€œWhy? Because the others can make up the choir, but they can never
replace him as the singer. Heā€™s the only singer.
ā€œIt hurts me a lot, but the reality is that itā€™s going badly for us
and I canā€™t see a way out. The title would be: ā€˜After Messi, what
next?
ā€œAfter Messi, there is nothing. Itā€™s embarrassing to rely on Icardi.
Pipa [Higuain] is 10 times better than Icardi.
ā€œThat guy [Sampaoli] doesnā€™t know anything. The only thing he knows is
what heā€™s going to eat at his friendā€™s house. Pipa has to have a new
chance.ā€
