Alakija urges women to uplift one another
Entrepreneur and one of Africa’s richest women, Mrs. Folorunsho Alakija, says there is need for women who have made it in various spheres of life to help other women to excel.
She said during a visit to Punch Place, the headquarters of Punch Nigeria Limited in Magboro, Ogun State, on Wednesday, that since God did not create any gender with a preferential treatment to excel above the other, there was need for women to rise out of the shadow of irrelevance in the society.
Her visit was ahead of her March 10, 2018 University of Marriage Retreat in Lagos, a programme aimed at upholding families for nation building and the May 23, 2018 10th anniversary of her foundation, Rose of Sharon.
The Rose of Sharon Foundation has reportedly impacted the lives of more than 4,262 widows and indirectly helped 10,000 immediate family members in Lagos, Ogun and other parts of the country.
Alakija, who also heads the Rose of Sharon Glorious Ministry International, said she had created another charity – Flourish Africa – which would cater to women, widows and orphan children.
She said Flourish Africa was designed to provide women from all walks of life with the tools to achieve a fulfilled life.
“One of the areas God called us to minister is the area of helping widows and orphans. If we do not spread the word about the ‘forgotten people’ nobody will remember them. We do not want to look the other way. Why should the world be leaving more than 50 per cent of its population, women, behind? This is the reason for Flourish Africa,” she said.
According to her, many people assume that philanthropy is easy for her because of her wealth but that philanthropy does not have to just be about money.
She said some people simply needed to be encouraged while other needed to be taught about how to excel.
“Flourish Africa is there to inspire, encourage and help others up. Women need to come out and thrive. There is also the need to teach women how to change the thinking of their girls from childhood,” Alakija said.
