A final year student of the Department of Accounting , Osun State University, Yemi Olaniyan , whose family alleged disappeared from the Ojodu Police Station in Lagos State , has come out of hiding .
The student was presented to journalists by the Commissioner of Police in Osun State , Mr . Fimihan Adeoye, at the police headquarters in Osogbo on Wednesday.
Olaniyan said he had wanted to sleep at the Ojodu Police Station the day he first travelled to Lagos , but changed his mind and went to stay at a shopping complex from where he left for Ilorin the following morning .
He said he started an online job in Ilorin , the Kwara State capital, to raise his school fees which he said he lost to the MMM Ponzi scheme like thousands of other Nigerians .
Olaniyan said, ā€œI went to Lagos and it became dark that day . I could not return to Osogbo. I decided to go to the Ojodu Police Station to pass the night . One of my female friends called me and I told her that since I could not make it back to Osogbo that day , I would pass the night at the Ojodu Police Station .
ā€œ After speaking to her, I changed my mind . I looked for a space at a shopping complex and passed the night there. The following morning , I got a free ride to Ilorin . When I got to Ilorin , I started doing a menial job to raise money.
ā€œ I had to work to raise money because I had used my school fees for MMM and lost the money. I did not deliberately mislead the public. My friend that released the information online later called and said I should return home .
ā€œ She said DSS operatives were on her trail . She said she would commit suicide if I didnā€™ t return. Because of that threat, I left Ilorin and went to one of our neighbours , who is a retired officer of the DSS. The man , after listening to my story , led me to the DSS office .
I am sorry for whatever embarrassment that misinformation might have caused the police. ā€
The CP said the student turned himself in to the DSS and the operatives took him to the police.
He said , ā€œ Findings showed that the student paid fees last when he was in 200 level and he is now in 400 level. The information in the public tilted towards police harming the student , whereas he never slept at the station . ā€
The Vice Chancellor of the Osun State University, Prof . Labode Popoola , had in 2016 said students of the university owed the school over N 1 bn .
He had said most of them invested in MMM and lost their fees to the Ponzi scheme.
