Manchester City vs Manchester United: Paul Pobga reveals ‘secret’ behind rampaging second-half

The 25-year-old played a starring role in United’s breathtaking 3-2 win over Manchester City.

Confirming a widely-accepted theory, Paul Pobga revealed in the aftermath of Manchester United’s thrilling 3-2 win over Manchester City that he’s better suited in a three-man midfield as opposed to a two-man system.

Arsenal legend Thierry Henry, now a pundit for Sky Sports, spoke to Pogba about the match as the duo dissected the midfielder’s second-half goals against the Sky Blues.

“When I play in a two-man system, I always have the thing on my mind to protect my defence, Pogba admitted to his compatriot Henry.

With Nemanja Matic and Ander Herrera sitting deep in the second-half, United went for it as they had nothing to lose at 2-0 down and found themselves level  bare minutes after the interval thanks to a quick-fire brace from their No.6.
“With more freedom, I can make those runs inside the box,” Pogba further added as Henry nodded his assent.

Pundits and fans alike have been in unison when expressing their dismay at Pobga being utilised in a central midfield pivot, as they feel like the 25-year-old’s natural game gets curbed in such a formation.

With Jose Mourinho leaning towards a more cautious approach, however, United fans have been unable to see the Pogba of Juventus, save for flashes this season.

And with the midfielder himself opening up on his ‘best’ position, it would seem the ball is in Mourinho’s court to continue utilising the midfielder in a more advanced role.
Standing at 6’4 tall, Pobga’s athletic prowess allows him to make late runs into the box and arrive at the right time to guide home a cross or layoff from a teammate and on Saturday, that’s exactly what happened with first Ander Herrera and then Alexis Sanchez setting him up for a lightning-fast brace.
