Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has given his backing to proposals to introduce safe standing at Premier League stadiums.
Wenger, however, believes that the idea of safe standing in the English top flight should be further explored on the grounds that it would improve the atmosphere at matches.
“I am in favour personally. I think the atmosphere is much better when people stand,” BBC Sport quotes Wenger as saying. “I think it is a tradition of English football to have that and overall I have to say it is much better.
“There are safety reasons why they don’t do it and I can understand that, but if the safety is right, it has my 100% backing.”
The all-seater requirement for English football stadiums was introduced based on recommendations made in the Taylor Report into the 1989 Hillsborough disaster, in which 96 Liverpool fans were killed.
However, the legislation only applies to clubs in England’s top two divisions and teams such as Celtic have already introduced safe standing.
