Simple craze of Religion by Sophia Ohiaeri

RELIGION…
Gone are the peaceful days when religion was a belief and a system of faith and worship, but right now it has somehow turned into a fierce and aggressive behavior/action. Do not get me wrong, I am a Christian but most Christians have literally taken religion over the edge that religion now seem like a belief and worship of supernatural fetish beings. Okay hear me out, I may have some points to back this up.
Just the other day, I was in a cab and i saw a PROCESSION of women with bunches of broom in their hands, saying out loud: “E DEY WORK!” Like seriously, why? Like the broom is supposed to sweep out all the evil forces from your home. To make it worse, they were selling the broom for #5000, a bunch of broom that shouldn’t cost more than #200. I kept asking myself what makes this brooms special. The other day, a family friend had a miscarriage and rather than go seek medical attention because it was obviously a medical issue and due to the fact that she never attended ante-natal classes and must have miscarried the pregnancy, she travelled all the way to another local government area to seek spiritual help. Or is it the story that a little girl was almost starved to death because of her stubborn nature and her pastor misread it saying she had an “obanje” spirit in her and needed her to fast for 5days straight without food or water and her sister had to see to it by locking her up in a room without food or water because she believed in her pastor but after 3days, she came back to her senses when she saw that she was losing her sister slowly due to starvation of food and water and stopped going to that church afterwards.
Funny enough, these foreigners that brought the religion to us don’t take it way to serious the way we do. Every man who feels he can preach and quote bible verses automatically thinks he should own a church already and goes on to establish his own church, enslaving more people. If I am correct, one needs to be called or led by the Holy Spirit before venturing to have a ministry but these days, that hasn’t been the case. Everyone wants to be a pastor, mostly for financial gains. It is only fair to say that we have fallen prey to such scams as we are eagerly looking for signs, wonders and miracles and then we proceed to attend this churches established by these greedy self-acclaimed men of God, not knowing the source of the powers they use in performing miracles. How can a man of God give a brethren of his church a spiritual salt and water to bath with? Was it God who blessed these items himself? Why don’t we open our eyes to these things and do the needful or should it be that we all are looking for salvation by all means necessary?
It has become quite alarming because even educated people don’t see the need to seek medical attention when sick because their pastor gave them spiritual oil or fruit or soap or water and they believe these will heal them…lol.
At the end of the day, some of these people lose their lives and their families are quick blame it on witchcraft or formidable forces from their villages. No one wants to say the truth or rather open their eyes to the truth. Well, I think the most annoying one is the part where we all think even though we don’t work, manna will fall from heaven because we are God’s children…this is really a shallow thought and an excuse to be officially lazy.
It is even said that prayer without work is vain. Rather than work, we choose to pray. Rather than be at your place of work, you go for vigils and end up waking up late for work. I am not saying that God shouldn’t come first but He said that there is time for everything. Say a short prayer and move on to productive things knowing that God has your back. The founders of religion don’t go the extra miles we go and that’s why they mostly have their lives in check but we would rather choose to pray and watch and then blame the economy and leaders for our own laziness. You can be your own boss if you set your priorities right.
This is not a bias against religion but a call out to know where we are defaulting and also try to adjust for a better tomorrow.
