Super Eagles defender Leon Balogun is thrilled to see FSV Mainz beat the drop in the German Bundesliga following Saturday’s 2-1 away win against Borussia Dortmund at the Signal Iduna Park, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.
Bote Baku and Yoshoro Moto scored for Mainz inside the opening 15 minutes but Maximillian Philip got the hosts’ only goal of the game.
The win took Mainz’s points haul to 36 from 33 matches and left them 14th in the 18-team table, six points better off than Wolfsburg who occupy the final relegation spot in 16th place.
“What a way to safe the league!!! It was a hard season with a lot of ups and downs,” Balogun tweeted.
“This year definitely showed us that every single soul is needed to reach our goals. Congrats to the whole club, the team, the staff, the employees, family & friends and of course the fans .”
The centre-back who has just recovered from a rib injury has made 14 league appearances for Mainz this season.
He has missed Mainz’s last three games as a result of the injury.
It remains to be seen whether Balogun will remain at the club next season with his contract set to expire at the end of the current campaign.
