Acclaimed Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has been awarded the 2018 Pen Pinter prize.
The prize which would be awarded her October 9 is intended to honour a writer of outstanding literary merit.
Over the last decade it has been won by writers like Margaret Atwood, Salam Rushdie and Tom Stoppard.
While announcing her as a beneficiary, one of the judges Maureen Freely wrote “in this age of privitised, marketised self, Chimamanda Adichie is the exception who defies the rule. Sophisticated beyond measure in her understanding of gender, race, and global inequality, she guides us through the revolving doors of identity politics liberating us all.”
On October 9 Adichie will announce her co winner the 2018 international writer of courage. She would choose who is active in defence of freedom of expression, often at great risk to their safety.
