Girl, 15, dies and 14-year-old boy is left fighting for his life ‘after taking “dirty pills” during an end of year celebration with school friends’

A 15-year-old girl has died and a 14-year-old boy was left fighting for his life after they allegedly took ‘dirty pills’ during an end of year celebration with school friends.

The unnamed teenage girl was found ill in a street in Tavistock around 4.15pm on Saturday, with emergency services airlifting her to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth.

She died in hospital shortly after, as officials believe the young teens had an adverse reaction to the pills.

The boy, who is also unnamed, was in critical condition but now is recovering in hospital as of Sunday afternoon.

On Sunday afternoon, police said they had located the substance the teens took at the scene but added they knew ‘very little’ about the substance.

The teenagers’ names have not been revealed yet.

The incident happened near the disused viaduct near Crowndale Road in the market town on the western edge of Dartmoor.

Local residents expressed shock at the news – and said it happened on Perswell Farm on land connected to the disused viaduct.

People were spotted leaving flowers at the scene.

One resident, who did not want to be named, said: ‘People are leaving flowers near the viaduct where it happened.

‘It’s had a bad impact on the local community because young children are involved.

‘They were with a group of kids celebrating the end of GCSE exams and the poor girl had barely tasted the pill by the time it had a nasty effect

‘The teenagers had taken dirty pills – it’s very sad.

‘A group of children were celebrating around the viaduct.’

Officials are appealing for anyone with more information to come forward.

A post mortem examination will be carried out on the girl to determine what substance caused the fatal reaction.

Officials are also talking to the teens’ families and friends to find out how they got the substances.

Inspector Pete Turner, of Devon and Cornwall police, said: ‘Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and we are providing support to them at this terrible time.

‘We are at the very early stages of the investigation and enquiries are ongoing as to how the substance was obtained.

‘I would like to stress that initial inquiries show that this is an isolated incident involving these two young people and we do not believe that there is a wider risk to the Tavistock community.

‘We would however urge all parents and carers to speak to their children and young people about the risks of taking unknown substances.’
