Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola, has hailed Manchester City’s players’ winning mentality in Sunday’s Community Shield and urged them to maintain the same form if they are to retain their English Premier League title this coming season.
Guardiola won his first silverware leading of the new season leading his side to defeat Chelsea 2-0 in Wembley.
Sergio Aguero scored both Manchester City goals.
“We started well and played the level of last season with just five or six training sessions,” the City manager said after the game.
“The mentality was in the right position. It’s our third year, so most of the things we practice we know, not like when you arrive.
“We have to play with this attitude and what we have done. We’ll see at the end of the season what our level was.
“When you win, you’re happy.
“We don’t have to think too much about defending the title. That was the first game – we have to prepare game by game.
“In April and May, we will know. The result will show who we are. We’re not talking about having to win the Premier League title.”
Guardiola also added that youngster Phil Foden is ready to to compete for a place in the first team following his remarkable performance against Chelsea in the Community Shield.
Foden set up Aguero for Manchester City’s first goal.
“He was ready last season. Now he is one year on, he is more mature.
“He was training last season with us and he fought well with all of our players.
“It is so good to have another player with his talent. He’s a City fan – and Mancunian and it is so good for us.”
