Martin Keown has called on Unai Emery to ditch Matteo Guendouzi and replace him with Lucas Torreira in Arsenal’s starting XI for the Premier League clash with Everton. The Uruguayan was signed from Sampdoria for a reported £26million and was expected to be a mainstay in the Arsenal midfield this season. However, he is yet to start in the Premier League, with Emery largely favouring Guendouzi and Granit Xhaka in the centre of the park. But Torreira impressed Keown in a 4-2 win over Vorskla Poltava in the Europa Leagueand while he applauded Guendouzi’s spirited displays in his early days with the Gunners, he is convinced that the 22-year-old is a cut above the Frenchman and insists he should be starting against Everton on Sunday. ‘Guendouzi has come into that midfield,’ Keown told BT Sport. Arsenal manager Unai Emery during the UEFA Europa League, Group E match at the Emirates Stadium, London.
‘You have to say he’s played with a lot of heart, a lot of spirit for a youngster, there’s ingredients in his game that might have been missing from the team. ‘But Torreira surely has to come in now and he has to play. ‘He does things very simply, he’s not frightened to make a pass, he feeds people as well.
‘He knows what he’s good at and he’s got good ability as well. I like his tenacity.’ Emery was satisfied with Arsenal’s display on the whole, with goals from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Mesut Ozil and Danny Welbeck getting the job done, although he was frustrated at conceding twice in the dying stages of the tie. ‘It was disappointing to see the two goals go in because there was progress in the 90 minutes. We want to do better in this minute.
‘When you are 4-0 up you want to continue to be competitive and to score more goals not concede like today. For us it is very important to start this competition with this victory. ‘We are giving chances to many players to find the pieces and for the confidence. We need to because we are going to play a lot of matches. We need players and need to give minutes to players. A victory in these situations is the best thing for us. ‘It is good for many players. I want to continue to be competitive in each match. Some players are better when they are playing regularly. ‘Today we are happy but it is clear that we need to continue to improve in things.’
