Brtish-born Nigerian heavyweight boxer, Anthony Joshua, has defeated Alexander Povetkin in the seventh round challenger on Saturday night to retain his IBF, IBO, WBO and WBA titles at the Wembley Stadium in London.
Anthony Joshua who has made it 22 fights undefeated, reaffirmed his status as the world’s leading heavyweight, knocking out his tough Russian challenger with knock out in round seven of the fight, got off to a challenging start with his corner already working so hard in the fourth round to patch him up. Povetkin had powered a right hand into Joshua’s temple at the start of the third, making Joshua is look slow, cumbersome and a little timid and another quickfire left sneaks through Joshua’s defences. Povetkin hounded Joshua, looking to make his dominance pay and floor him while he was suffering. Joshua however, countered from the fourth round with a nice combination to share the round with Potvekin who had clearly won the first three rounds.
The world heavyweight champion whose parents hail from Sagamu, Ogun State, had some praise for his worthy opponent, started to make a stunning comeback in round five when he landed couple of thudds on Potvekin’s temple.
AJ finally dropped Potvekin in round seven when as he unleashed a combination of blows that left him on the floor of the ring unable to get up. After the fight Joshua however, had some praise for his WBA mandatory challenger, “I have always said to myself, Povetkin has been a gold medallist, he fought for the world title when I turned pro and he has stayed at the top of his game since then. You have to give him credit. If that was in tennis, football, basketball you’d say this was a serious challenger. We’re against serious competitors for this championship belt. I’ve got to keep my feet firmly on the ground. They’re not only going to be great fights but very tough. I’ve suffered with a flu. This camp has been difficult. I knew I just had to stay in there”.
