INEC HAS DEEPENED NIGERIA’S DEMOCRACY BY ITS DECISION TO DECLARE OSUN ELECTION INCONCLUSIVE – LAI MOHAMMED
BY JOSEPH OMONIYI:
The Chairman of the Council’s Media Committee, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has hailed the Independent Electoral Commision, INEC for what he called a well organized election in Osun on Saturday.
In a statement issued in Lagos on Monday, the Minister for Information, Culture and Tourism said, “Local and foreign observers have hailed INEC and the security agencies for a well-organised election. We join them in this commendation.”
“Our confidence in the ability of the relevant state institutions involved in the Osun election remains unshaken. So also is our belief that every disagreement resulting from the election must be resolved through the democratic process, rather than a resort to threats of fire and brimstone.”
Lai Mohammed however condemned the Peoples Democratic Party,PDP for its call on INEC to declare its candidate Ademola Adeleke as the winner of the election.
He said it reinforced the Council’s earlier statement that the opposition party was in the panic mode prior to the election and that it had no confidence in the institutions saddled with organising the polls.
The candidate of the PDP in the September 22 election, Senator Ademola Adeleke, currently leads while that of the APC, Gboyega Oyetola follows closely.
The rerun is set to take place on the 27th of September, 2018.
