Organised Labour on Tuesday took to the streets to observe what it called a national day of mourning and to nalso sensitise members ahead of the threatened strike set to kick off on the 6th of November, 2018.

Members of Labour in various part of the country, who are protesting the failure of the Federal government to accept the new minimum wage of N30,000, flooded the streets in a peacefull rally

In Ikorodu, Lagos, the protest caused traffic gridlock from the Onipanu Bus Stop to Obanikoro Bus Stop as of the time of filing this report.

The protesters were seen holding flags of the Nigeria Labour Congress, and sharing fliers, to passers-by, which detailed their demands from government.

The flier, which is titled, National Day of Mourning and Outrage, said the Organised Labour was in mourning and outrage because they receive the lowest salary in the world, while government officials including the president, governors, legislators, ministers are among the highest paid in the world.

It was alleged that the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, did not tell the government the truth.

A footnote on the flier urged Lagos residents to buy foodstuffs as “markets, shops, businesses, offices, transportation and filling stations will be shut. Stay at Home!”

Also in Ekiti Sate, workers joined their counterparts across the 36 states of the federation in holding a sensitisation protest to press
for a new minimum wage of N30,000.

The protest, which kicked off at the Mobil Filling Station in Ajilosun area of Ado Ekiti, will be terminated at the Governor’s Office, where they are scheduled to meet Governor Kayode Fayemi and table their grievances.

The workers trekked a distance of about four kilometres to Ijigbo Junction, Okeyinmi, Fajuyi Park and sensitised the populace on the significance of the impending strike should government fail to accede to their demands.

The protest, coordinated by the National Vice-President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Mr. Solomon Adelegan, also has in attendance the Chairman of NLC in Ekiti, Mr. Ade Adesanmi, his colleague in the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Odunayo Adesoye and the Secretary of the Joint Negotiating Council, Blessing Oladele.

The well attended protest caused heavy traffic snarl along Ado-Ikere-Akure highway.

Adesanmi, Adesoye, Oladele and other labour leaders insisted that it smacked of insensitivity for the federal government to have turned down the N30,000 proposal, when it can pay the jumbo pays being taken by politicians.
