TOP NOTCH FOR ‘UP NORTH’; A NIGERIAN MOVIE TO BE PROUD OF!

Read Time:1 Minute, 17 Second

According to the Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria, CEAN’s recent Box Office information (20th of January), ‘Up North’ stands in the number four spot of movies (local and foreign) in the Nigerian Cinema. A movie which deserves more accolades that it currently gets.

The award-winning director, Tope Oshin beautifully told a typical ‘Nigerian story’ while also showcasing some ‘beauties’ of the north and re-orientating us about the area and its people; the northern wedding party, other social gatherings in the north, exquisite sights and locations.

Using couple of plants, she schooled both non-northerners and educate the indigenes on religious and health matters.

Like the way the Grand Khadi Laughed when Bassey (Banky W) and his friend, Sadiq (Ibrahim, Suleiman) came to tell him Halima 1’s father refused to let his daughter run.

It subtly drives home the fact not every Hausa Muslim is a fanatic.

We also love the ‘Ibotic-Hausan’ love she played with Bassey and Mariam and the way she did was not predictable sort of, unlike many Nigerian romantic-drama.

We saw a different kind of ‘Nigerian-love-movie’ in a movie that looks like the Indian kind-of’ and it’s lovable and was realistically plotted too.

The movie was able to successfully explore themes like Family politics, religious conflict and so on, subtly driving home the points with subtle comedy.

Casting a very large crowd was also creatively done, something not so many Nigerian directors can boast of. They were not just used to pass time.
