IF I WERE THE CEO OF HUAWEI, THIS WOULD BE MY APPROACH

1. Whip up patriotic sentiments in China such that once we release the HongMeng OS, the majority of the Chinese citizens would choose to use it. We would leverage the Chinese government to drive this as a “National Interest” agenda. This is about 1billion phone users out of the current estimated 3 billion phone users on earth.
2. Make Huawei smartphones so much cheaper that it would almost be the same price with feature phones. This is to target the bottom of the pyramids (BOP) in Africa and Asia. In Nigeria alone, this would take in about 30 million Nigerians who today use only feature phones and no Social media. We would introduce our WeChat to them. They never used WhatsApp, so they won’t have a problem converting to WeChat.
3. We would roll out the 5G network for India at 60% discount and push the cheap Huawei BOP smartphones I mentioned in 2 above. The idea is for us to capture the Indian market which is another 1.2 billion people.
4. African market would be a priority with our low-end smartphone that would run HongMeng and WeChat messaging app. Africa would buy the cheapest phones because of our limited purchasing power.
5. Since a sizeable number of Apple phones are manufactured in China to reduce cost of production, work with the Chinese government to introduce laws and tariffs to make the cost of production for apple phones get high. This would help reduce the demand of the American phones and increase demand of the Chinese phone – Huawei.
6. Allow anyone to use the HongMeng OS for free as open source, with each manufacturer being able to customize as they deem fit. This includes Apple and Samsung.
Summary:
Get the 1 billion users in China, get the 1.2 billion users in India, get 200 million in Africa.
Leave the US and Europe with Android. Drive the cost of production of apple phones high in China. Take control of 60% of the market.
In my humble opinion, I think America miscalculated this.
