No doubt, Kanu remains one of the most loved Nigerian sportsman both past and present, for his contribution and achievement to the history of the game in his nation and clubs. One of the most notable sides he played for in Europe is English Premier League club, Arsenal, where he is till today, regarded as a legend, voted as the 13th of “The Greatest 50s” of the club.

His professional career began with Iwuayawun Nationale before he caught the fancy of Deutch sides, Ajax and then later he moved to Inter Milan in Italy, where he could only play 12 games, scoring one goal after suffering from a heart problem that almost crippled his career. He underwent a medical examination at Inter, which revealed a serious heart defect; he underwent surgery in November 1996 to replace an aortic valve and did not return to his club until April 1997.
Kanu’s experience also led to his founding the Kanu Heart Foundation, an organisation that helps predominantly young African children who suffer heart defects and whose work was expanded to provide aid for homeless children in 2008
But he bounced back bigger and better after he joined Arsenal.
