Read Time:1 Minute, 48 Second

The establishment of an Electoral Offenses Desk at the Force Criminal Investigations Department (FCID), Force Headquarters, Abuja, has been approved by the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, psc(+), NPM, fdc, with the Commissioner of Police, FCID, as the Desk Officer. The IGP has also given his approval for its implementation at state commands across the country, with Assistant Commissioners of Police in charge of Criminal Investigation Departments serving as State Desk Officers.

The Electoral Offences Desk Officers’ mandate includes collecting and investigating all electoral offences and complaints from members of the public or other sources, with the goal of determining culpability in accordance with the amended Electoral Act 2022, and bringing charges before competent courts for necessary legal action. The IGP directed the Desk to begin its work right away with some individual incidents that had been recorded during pre-election activities such as screening, conventions, and primaries.

Acting on reliable and actionable intelligence, operatives of the Nigeria Police Force attached to the Keffi Area Command of the Nasarawa State Command detained twenty-four alleged political thugs at Minki Suites, along the Keffi-Akwanga Road, in accordance with its mandate.

In a convoy of seven private automobiles, thugs suspected of being loyal to a candidate in the Nasarawa West Senatorial primary arrived at the hotel.

Eight (8) pump action guns, two (2) locally made revolver guns, 37 rounds of live cartridges, four (4) bulletproof vests, twenty-seven (27) mobile phones, two (2) pairs of vigilante uniforms, five (5) cutlasses, ten (10) assorted knives, criminal charms, and other incriminating objects were recovered from the arrested suspects. According to preliminary investigations, the suspects, who are hired thugs, carry out their horrific deeds under the pretext of being members of the Nigerian Vigilante Group (VGN).

IGP Usman Alkali Baba, the Inspector-General of Police, has directed that the matter be sent to the Force Criminal Investigation Department’s (FCID) Electoral Offences Desk and that the concerned aspirant be arrested immediately for further investigation. The IGP reaffirms the force’s commitment to eliminating risks to peaceful and credible elections at all levels, while also promising to prosecute anyone caught engaged in political thuggery.
