Surgical experts of the Global Health Research unit have called for a collective collaboration where surgeons can carry out research in order to improve surgical outcomes for their patients.

This was mentioned during the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), Global Surgery Unit Nigeria Hub Network Dissemination and Engagement conference that was held in Lagos on June 16, 2022.

During the conference, Prof. Osaretin Albert Taiwo Ebuehi, the Deputy Provost from the College of Medicine, University of Lagos, while giving his goodwill speech, mentioned that the key aim of the global surgery unit is the empowerment of frontline surgeons to bring out change for their patients while, advocating to policy makers for high level change.

He added that, the research findings disseminated during the conference will no doubt be of immense benefits to his colleagues, clinicians and allied health workers and also to engage key stakeholder in surgical research in Nigeria and across the world.

Prof. Osaretin stated that, “Over 5 billion people around the world lack access to safe affordable surgical care, thereby, research to support safe surgery is needed to ensure that the benefits of surgical care are realized across the world.

While speaking with Hotjist.com, Prof. Adesoji Ademuyiwa, the Hub Director, mentioned that the conference was organized to create a platform to engage stakeholders, that is, regulatory bodies that will work together as partners.

He added that, the conference was also put in place to encourage surgeons for grant fundable research, such that, the research that they are doing can be funded by both international and local agencies such as, TETFUND, as well as, international funding agencies like NHIR in the United Kingdom, so that the research can be qualitative and also have high impact on the patients.

Omolara Williams, a paediatric surgeon, expressed her joy when she said that, the collaboration has yielded significant results and it is something that should be learnt from.

She also mentioned that, with the collaboration, surgeons can build strength and capacity.

Meanwhile, Doctor Adewale Adisa, a medical surgeon from the Department of Surgery, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, gave  reasons why surgeons need to collaborate and work together.

He said, “If this was working abroad, then it will be a great privilege to have surgeons from different backgrounds, specialization, and hospitals coming together for the benefits of the patients.”

“It has been said over and over again, that if you have to go fast, go alone. But, if you want to go far and achieve a lot, work together.”

However, the surgical researchers believe that collective collaboration will help to provide surgery evidence, support practice change and promote clinical collaboration.
