UPDATE: IGP ORDERS BAN OVER SPY NUMBER PLATE
Usman Alkali Baba, the Inspector-General of Police, psc(+), NPM, fdc, has issued an absolute ban on the use of Police SPY vehicle number plates by car owners in all 50 states of the union. No matter if it has authorisation or not, all authorizations are hereby permanently cancelled.
This order is required to stop people driving about with the benefits of SPY police license plates continuously disobeying traffic laws and other laws governing how to utilize the roads. Therefore, the IGP has ordered that police personnel and officers from other security agencies who are assigned to VIPs who drive vehicles with SPY license plates should ensure swift adherence to this direction or risk being arrested for violating it.
The Assistant Inspectors General of Police (AIGs) who supervise the Commissioners of Police (CPs) in the 36 States of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory have been instructed by the IGP to ensure that the aforementioned directions are fully implemented. The IGP expressly ordered the AIGs and CPs to see to it that all SPY license plates already in use be confiscated going forward. However, the owners of such cars should not be detained unless they are police officers or employees of other security services performing escort responsibilities.
The IGP did issue a warning, however, that when carrying out these tasks, officials must make sure that people’s rights and privileges are maintained in accordance with local laws and best practices around the world. In order to reinforce our internal security, other security agencies and the general public are urged to work with the police in this respect.
