INEC COMMENCES INVESTIGATION ON REPORT OF UNCOLLECTED PVCS ALLEGEDLY BURIED UNDERGROUND

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has been made aware of videos that are currently circulating online showing what appear to be Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) supposedly buried underground in certain locations, including the home of a well-known individual.
This was stated in the Press release which was signed by Festus Okoye, National Commissioner and Chairman of Information and Voter Education Committee on Thursday, 14th of July 2021.
Okoye stated that the Commission is working hard to guarantee that every eligible citizen who shows up in person at the registration location is registered. The issues of voter registration, compilation of the voters’ roll, and issuance of PVCs are at the core of any democratic election. We reassure Nigerians that this issue would be investigated thoroughly.
“These accusations are not being treated lightly by the Commission. We have launched a swift inquiry, and anyone found responsible for this evil plan that was clearly designed to deny Nigerians their right to vote would face legal repercussions,” he said.
The PVC is a right of every eligible Nigerian who registered to vote. Election voting rights guaranteed by the constitution cannot ever be restricted or limited in any way.
According to the Commission’s records, PVCs have been printed for all legally registered voters in Nigeria through January 14, 2022, and have been sent to every State of the Federation for voter collecting. Retrogressive elements won’t be able to undermine our efforts.
The Commission is already examining the PVC collection process to make it easier and more transparent. At the following regular quarterly meeting with stakeholders, this will be a key topic so that working together, we can find a long-term solution to the problem.
In the interim, we request that whoever discovered the purportedly buried PVCs bring them to our neighborhood State or Local Government office. Their patriotic contribution to the strengthening of our voting system will be this.
