JUST IN: COURT ORDERS PROMPT REVIEW OF JUDGES, OTHERS’ SALARIES
On Friday, an Abuja National Industrial Court ordered the Federal Government to set up the necessary procedures for an immediate review of the pay and benefits of Nigeria’s judicial officers.
The judge who made the decision stated that the country’s present judicial officers’ salaries and benefits are not only pitifully cheap but also insulting.
Chief Sebastine Hon filed a lawsuit against the Federal Government, and Justice Obaseki-Osaghae delivered judgment in that action (SAN).
He directed the Federal Government to start paying the Chief Justice of Nigeria, other Justices of the Supreme Court, and the President of the Court of Appeal N10 million per month.
In addition, Chief Judges of the Federal and States High Courts would get N8 million, while Judges of the Federal and States High Courts would receive N7 million. Other justices of the Appellate Court would also receive N8 million.
The judge concluded that the government’s 14-year refusal to examine the pay and benefits of judicial officers was unconstitutional and illegal and that it should be required to take the necessary action.
Justice Obaseki-Osaghae expressed regret that judges and justices, who serve as ministers in the temple of justice, have fallen prey to injustice in the nation.
