UPDATE: JALINGO RESIDENTS TERRIFIED OVER RECENT KILLINGS

Read Time:1 Minute, 47 Second

The latest wave of attacks and assassinations in the city have left residents of Jalingo, the capital of Taraba State, in palpable fear.

On Wednesday night, one person was shot dead in Jalingo’s Lassandi neighborhood, while Dr. Wallace George of the Federal Medical Centre was attacked at his home in Mile 6’s Catholic Cathedral.

The attackers, who were fleeing, shot and killed two vigilantes who had arrived to repel them.

With elections just around the corner, some of the locals who spoke with our correspondent voiced concern that the trend would deteriorate into a more chaotic situation.

“This development is concerning, and security organizations need to pay attention to stop this terrible trend. Where else in the state will people be safe if not in Jalingo?

Barr. Nurudeen Mohammed told reporters, “I am scared that we may have a problem at hand that we might not be able to control with elections around the horizon.”

Dr. Edeth Nkantah, the state chairman of the Nigeria Medical Association, commented on the attack on Dr. Wallace George by saying that many medical professionals had been disturbed by it.

Nkantah pointed out that even though doctors pay high taxes to the government, the least they could ask for was protection for their lives and property.

“Unnecessary and unjustified attacks on medical professionals are unacceptable because they might have a negative impact on the health and wellbeing of other society members.

“Industrial harmony may not be guaranteed if doctors are not safe in their living and working conditions, and they may be required to take an immediate leave of absence.”

Nkantah stated, “We, therefore, call on the state governor, commissioner of police, director of the DSS, commandant, NSCDC, and other heads of security agencies in Taraba State to swing into action and improve the general security situation in the state and ensure the safety of medical professionals and other health personnel.”

When contacted, the state’s acting police public relations officer, Gambo Kwache, stated the incident was under investigation and gave the public the go-ahead to carry on as usual because more officers have been sent out to find the murderers.
