– LGBTQ Community Outraged

Spain national football team and Real Madrid legend, Iker Casillas has apologised for deleting a tweet in which he said “I’m gay” while confirming that his account was hacked.
Earlier on Sunday, Casillas had tweeted that he was gay, “I hope you respect me: I’m gay. #happysunday”.
The tweet had sparked instant debate, with questions asked of whether the statement was true or a response to recent rumours regarding his personal life.
Casillas then deleted the tweet before confirming his account was hacked in an apologetic post to his followers. ”Hacked account. Luckily everything in order,” said Casillas. ”Apologies to all my followers. And of course, more apologies to the LGBT community.”
Former Spain and Barcelona defender Carles Puyol was among those to respond to the tweet, but the original message was deleted too. Reports in Spain claimed that Casillas was responding to speculation suggesting that he is dating Alejandra Onieva, having recently been linked with Melyssa Pinto, Rocio Osorno and Gerard Pique’s ex-wife, Shakira. Casillas’ love life has dominated gossip columns since the breakdown of his marriage to Sara Carbonero.
Openly gay footballer Josh Cavallo has led the criticism of Iker Casillas and Carles Puyol. Cavallo, who became the first openly gay male professional player in the world when he revealed his sexuality just under a year ago, led the criticism and says he felt let down to see two footballing icons make a joke out of coming out in such a way.
‘Iker Casillas and Carles Puyol joking and making fun out of coming out in football is disappointing,’ tweeted the Australian footballer as it became apparent the pair’s tweets had not been sincere.
‘It’s a difficult journey that any LGBTQ people have to go through. To see my role models and legends of the game make fun out of coming out and my community is beyond disrespectful.’
