NPFL SETS N10M AS MINIMUM INSURANCE COVER PER PLAYER
By Adeola Abdullah
Management of the Nigeria Professional Football League, (NPFL) has set a benchmark of 10 million naira for insurance claims from policies covering players of the 20 Premier League clubs, beginning from the 2022/2023 league season.
In a letter dated 10th November, 2022 and signed by the Head of Operations, Prince Davidson Owumi, the clubs in the top flight were informed that the minimum claim from an insurance policy in the case of death or permanent disability of an employee, required by the NPFL from clubs is ten million naira (N10, 000,000.00) only.
The NPFL further insisted that such a policy must be acquired from a reputable insurance company and domiciled with the NPFL as required by the club licensing regulations.
In a similar development the circular also notified the clubs that it is mandatory that they hand over a signed copy of a player’s contract to the player and his agent, in accordance with section 9.49 and 12.12 of the NPFL framework and rules, and CAF club licensing document.
While the statement added that this move was necessitated by constant complaints from players that they do not have copies of their contracts, the league managers also warned erring clubs of severe sanctions, in the event of non-compliance.
