Agency Report

On Monday, residents of Calabar, in the Cross River State, swarmed the numerous commercial banks in search of money.

Long lines were present at the automated teller machines throughout the city, according to a News Agency of Nigeria correspondent who was on the scene to observe the situation.

According to NAN, there was also a lengthy line of people waiting to enter the banking hall for various transactions.

However, the majority of the ATMs were not dispensing cash, and because of the crowd, security staff at most banks were finding it difficult to keep things under control.

Some of the locals who spoke with NAN claimed they had joined the line before 6 a.m. to beat the crowds.

They regretted, however, that several banks had yet to open as of after 8 a.m. for unknown client reasons.

Abel Odidi, a resident who bemoaned the circumstance, claimed that since Thursday he had been unsuccessful in trying to obtain cash.

ā€œI had to come and try again this morning and unsuspectedly, the crowd I met when I got here around 7:30am was something lamentable,ā€ he stated.

Mr. Ashieshie Donald, who called the situation “awful,” railed against the people for having to deal with the simultaneous issue of being unable to get cash in both ATMs and banking halls.

In a similar vein, Olarewanju Rotimi, a civil servant who claimed to have been in line since 6 a.m., said that neither of the two ATMs was dispensing cash.

ā€œThe worst of it all is that the PoS operators with cash are exploiting the customers with their exorbitant charges,ā€ he said.

Attempts to speak with several bank personnel proved futile, as they indicated that only their headquarters could comment on the situation.

Security personnel were everywhere in the capital city at the same time.

The staff members were carefully positioned across the historic city.

The deployment of security officers was just a preventative measure, according to SP Irene Ugbo, the state police command’s spokeswoman, and there was no reason to be alarmed.
