Idris Elba, a British actor, and Mo Abudu, a Nigerian media tycoon, have teamed up to support African artists on the international stage.
According to a statement posted on Twitter by Ebony Life TV on Thursday, the main objective of the partnership is to replicate “the successful model of the EbonyLife Creative Academy across the continent” in order to give Africans access to top-notch film education.
“Secondly, we want to create a fresh batch of feature films and TV shows with African or Diasporan roots. Global audiences will be taken into consideration when developing these programs, the statement said.
Commenting about his collaboration with Abudu, the “Luther” actor expressed enthusiasm at the decision, saying it was a way to create a “more inclusive and diverse media landscape”, Variety reports.
“I’ve always been driven by a desire to use my position to change the world. By collaborating with Mo, we hope to give the upcoming generation of storytellers free, top-notch industry education and elevate their genuine voices.
“This alliance is a step toward developing a more inclusive and diverse media landscape, one that represents the views and experiences of Africa and its diaspora throughout the world,” he said.
The film producer also emphasized her belief in Africa’s creatives’ potential to captivate a worldwide audience with their tales.
We think that Africa has the talent and the stories to enthrall the globe, she continued. Our goal is to provide the best industry training, mentoring, and production opportunities so that our graduates can become valuable contributors to the global media landscape.
“We plan to hit the ground running and explore the very best that African and Black stories have to offer global audiences.”
