SUDAN EVACUATION: 7TH BATCH OF EVACUEES TO ARRIVE ABUJA BY NOON
– Evacuees Roughandle Embassy Officials over Claims of Nepotism
– 5th and 6th Batches Operated by Max Air and Azman Air to Arrive Abuja 10am
In the ongoing evacuation exercise of stranded Nigerians in troubled Sudan, the 7th batch of evacuees are due to arrive today in Abuja by around 12noon local time.
The Tarco Airline plane, B737-MAB left Port Sudan International Airport today, at about 5:25am local time, with 102 Nigerian nationals (Evacuees).
In a terse statement, the Nigerians In Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) gave the Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA) in Abuja, Nigeria to be between 11.30am and 12noon.
However, a mild drama ensued last time between the evacuees and Nigerian Embassy officials in Port Sudan.
A section of the evacuees accused Embassy officials of nepotism and disregard for people with higher vulnerability.
“The officials appeared to be giving preference to people who have familial relationships with. You can imagine that after several flights, we still have pregnant women and children yet to be airlifted”, said one of the evacuees in Port Sudan.
The situation degenerated with some of the evacuees roughhandling Embassy officials. It was alleged that the officials do not adhere to the priority list prepared based on vulnerability of the evacuees.
Another evacuee said, “You do not have an idea when your turn for evacuation will be because the officials seem to have discarded all previous priority lists prepared. Now you see people pushing and shoving to get on the buses taking people to the airport for airlifting”.
“The truth of the matter is, if they had a list, no one would have gone there
“The problem is that it wasn’t a list
“We would just be sitting with people and some will just pick up their bags and leave and you know people are seeing everything that’s happening. We already know that the embassy are being cruel, that is what they’ve been doing. Seeing people leaving one by one, made people angry and feel cheated.
“They started calling people who are influential via phone. And that is why people started following the footsteps of those going there. That was when they saw a car came to pick those that were picking their bags and leave one after the other.
“They lamented that they were not on the list and they are leaving!. Last time that there was a list of over 40-50 nobody went there”
In related development, two flights operated by Max Air and Azman Air, being the 5th and 6th batches of evacuations are scheduled to arrive in Abuja by 10am this morning (Sunday).
