Due to lack of oversight of the division’s officers, Lagos State Commissioner of Police Idowu Owohunwa has ordered the removal of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ogudu Police Division.

According to reports, Owohunwa fired the DPO after police from the division wrongfully accused Emmanuel Nnawuihe, a student at Cyprus University, of fraud and demanded N153,000 from him in the state’s Ojota region.

It was discovered that on Saturday, June 3, Nnawuihe was on his way to somewhere in the state when he was hailed down for a search at the Ojota under-bridge area by police officers who were on active duty.

According to reports, the police examined Nnawuihe’s car and phone but didn’t discover anything suspicious.

Further information revealed that the cops escorted the student to a remote area near the underpass after the search and coerced him into opening his mobile banking app.

It was discovered that the police officers allegedly threatened to injure Nnawuihe unless he consented to transfer the money into an account owned by someone who was not present after discovering that he had roughly N2 million in his bank account.

Speaking about the incident, a source revealed that the student was threatened by the police even though he had done nothing illegal and should not have been given the money.

The insider continued, saying that the student realized his life was in danger when he saw how desperate the police officers were.

It was further gathered that Nnawuihe, who became angered after being extorted by the policemen, informed the Lagos State Police Command.

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Idowu Owohunwa, it was gathered, ordered the arrest of the accused policemen for questioning.

Confirming the incident, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, said the policemen had been arrested, adding that the command had commenced an investigation into the case.

“The money (N153,000) has been refunded to the victim and the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, Idowu Owohunwa, has ordered a probe of the allegation against the policemen who are currently in detention.

“The policemen are undergoing an orderly room trial. The redeployment of DPOs is routine,” Hundeyin said.
